When it comes to beauty maintenance, I will spend close to anything on products. Dropping money for beauty services is another story. Perhaps you can label me a service snob, but I’m rarely satisfied with manicures, pedicures, facials and hair color done in a salon. Its not to say that I’m more experienced or knowledgeable in these services – I’ve had many “oops” moments. However, since I like to change my colors (hair & nails) and don’t have the time and prefer to spend my beauty budget on products – I’ve become a self-proclaimed DIY beauty service expert.
My discovery of genius eSalon Custom Formulated Hair Color is credited to Lucky Magazine (December 2012 issue, page 150). Visiting esalon.com and creating my own custom product was very simple – first I created a profile that addressed specific questions about my hair type, color (natural and colored), process history, etc. I was then allowed to choose from a catalog of shades that gave me box-style examples of each shade.
The color selection was quite broad – more than traditional at-home color and certainly more along the lines of salon brands. There were auburns, violets, ash, pearl, golden and neutral shades in various intensities. I chose Medium Brown Cool Beige which looked similar to the color I currently had. You can even upload a photo and consult with an expert who emails you tips about how to achieve your desired look.

After paying my $29.90 ($24.95 + $4.95 shipping), I received my color in the mail and was immediately impressed by the attention to detail that went into the packaging. The monochromatic white cardboard box opened into an impeccably packed kit that housed developer (mine was 25%), custom color with a personalized label, an accessories pack (gloves, brush, conditioner, color remover and color protector) and a personalized instruction manual.
The application was typical of at-home color with the option of using bottle, brush (I use both) application. You mix the developer with the color and apply according to directions. I did a root touch-up application followed by eSalon’s Shine & Rinse technique. The packets of color remover and protector were very handy and kept my hairline clean, but the conditioner was just so-so.
After carefully following the eSalon expert directions, I was left with perfectly even, medium brown hair that had just the right amount of warmth. The initial results were a bit darker than I had anticipated, but after 2 weeks, the color faded to a shade closer to the sample shade. I can’t say that my hair felt healthier since it was pretty dry and in desperate need of a trim – but eSalon Custom Formulated Hair Color didn’t leave my hair feeling more dry/damaged. My white hairs (I have a bit of white, with a significant patch of white at the crown) were neatly camouflaged to look like highlights (about 2 shades lighter than the rest of my hair).

eSalon Custom Formulated Hair Color offers the perfect solution for those who either can’t make it to the salon, can’t (or won’t) spend exorbitant amounts of money at the salon or just want to do a quick touch up with reliable results. I was very satisfied with my end result and thought the Shine and Rinse technique worked wonderfully to refresh color without over depositing pigment. I’m going to hold off coloring my hair until I get a hair cut – but I’m sure I will become a loyal eSalon customer!
