QUICK REVIEW: An über lightweight priming serum that assists existing skin care effectiveness. I don’t know what it does – but within days, my skin improves. I’m now on my third bottle. Pricey – but worth it.

the REVIEW (10/01/10): For me, Dior will always have a mystique. I remember staring at their perfectly airbrushed ads in the 90’s – aspiring to create those same diaphanous images on my clients and on myself. Other than the occasional Icone product, my big skin care purchase will always belong to Chanel Creme No.1. and La Mer. Which is probably why I always keep La Mer around – just the scent brings me back to when I started in cosmetics…

But I digress.

After many disappointments and short lived triumphs with Capture products, I was very wary of this product in spite of the interesting claims:

“An exceptionally effective age-defying step that successfully eliminates toxins, down to the heart of the skin cells, to intensely regenerate, stimulate cell-turnover, and correct all visible signs of aging.”

Oh. Toxins in the heart of my skin cells…heaven forbid. I still avoided it, opting for organic skin care and other luxuries. Then Allure Magazine chose me to receive a deluxe sample of this for a product trial – asking me to please use it AM and PM under my existing skin care routine, as it is formulated to boost the effectiveness of your products. I thought at best it would do nothing and if it gave me a rash, I would stop.

Well, two weeks later, I just went to Sephora and dropped my $95 to get a full size. My skin is incredibly smooth, even and radiant. I did temporarily break out, either due to stress or said toxins leaving the skin, but it was short lived and since I’m left without those annoying bumps under my skin, worth it. I’m not sure it works to boost the effectiveness of other products, much like the Perricone Cold Plasma cream, how are you supposed to tell? However, there is a consistent improvement in the overall appearance of my skin without any rash or irritation, a much better result than those obtained by the Cold Plasma.

One Essential has a very fluid texture, standard Dior skin care scent and soaks into the skin almost immediately. I put a dime size amount in my palm and use my fingertips to apply which minimizes waste. I’ve been using it AM and PM religiously either with or without other products. After a week, I started wearing less foundation, and now at 2+ weeks, I just use some powder. The need for concealer has also been greatly reduced. I didn’t notice any additional oily feeling, however, it did not provide any oil control. Since that is not its function – I won’t hold it against it.

The ingredient list reads like a chemistry cookbook – but since I’m all about results, this product will certainly have a longer lifespan in my skin care product regimen. In my opinion, a must have.

UPDATE (1/13/11): I’m on my 2nd purchased bottle of this serum. I have to say that a bottle doesn’t last that long – its only 1 oz. and I use at least 2 full pumps twice a day (see comment from Dior artist below) when I’m not trying out other products. I would say with regular use, I would need to purchase a bottle every 5 weeks or so. My wallet just cringed. However, I’m a true believer that you “should” (even though I don’t) find a skin care routine that works and stick with it – adjusting only to your skin’s needs. This is a product that I will continue to use on a regular basis – until they discontinue or change the formula.

UPDATE (2/5/2011): I have no idea why this works so well. Whenever I use this consistently, it “resets” my skin – making it almost normal! I can’t say that its active enough on its own (unless you have oilier and under 25 year old skin), but it works magnificently under any treatment I use and really makes a visible difference. It must, because whenever I come back to it, I see an immediate improvement.

UPDATE (03/09/2012): Purchased the large size – 2.5oz. for $150.  Third bottle – Best in Beauty Award!

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:“This youth-restoring super-serum helps detoxify skin cells to powerfully correct all visible signs of aging: wrinkles, loss of firmness, dark spots, and lack of radiance. Applied before any other skincare products, One Essential boosts treatments’ effectiveness and extends their benefits over time. The skin regains its vitality and becomes more luminous, smoother, and visibly younger-looking. This skincare must-have doubles the effectiveness of any skincare routine as it helps to eliminate more than 7 billion toxins (accumulated in skin each day).”
RECOMMENDED APPLICATION: Apply morning and evening after cleansing, before your normal serum or moisturizer for double the benefits. Discontinue use if irritation occurs. Avoid contact with the eyes. This product contains an alpha hydroxyl acid that may increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun and particularly the possibility of sunburn. Use a sunscreen, wear suitable protective clothing, and limit sun exposure while using this product and for a week afterwards.

  1. I am a regional freelancer for Dior with total love for Dior Skincare! In fact it is how I came to work for them. Anywho…, two pumps is truly way way too much. This is a common issue we are finding more and more (in our region). We all tell our clients that One Essential has great ‘slip” to it, therefor you need much less than you may be accustomed to. I use one pump full at most on a client. I actually start with 1/2 a pump on the back of my hand and adjust as needed. I also show & discuss in detail with each client exactly how much we use, to continue to bring the point home about the amount.
The “extra” on my finger tips gets dragged down gently into the neck.

In the beginning of using OE, when you are getting your skin healthier, yes you can use more for the first week(s) or month but you do not need that larger amount to keep the amazing results nor to continue to see improvement. This product is so thoroughly packed with botanical brilliance and other marvels of science, wether it is a pea size or quarter size-you get the same payoff…..as long as a thin layer is on the skin, you are golden! Basically, IMHO you are simply wasting product. A 1.7 oz bottle should last you on average of 8 months for sure…geez even 6 months with a slightly heavier hand 😉
So, I suggest using it for 1 week straight (in case you took a break) and then try my approach of the 1 pump only for the next 2weeks. This is to re-adjust your senses to the smaller amount (we hate change don’t we!?) then for that final 4th week try and switch to a 1/2 pump. See if that is enough for you. You may be somewhere in between but nonetheless you’ll be using much less and saving your time and product 🙂
    Happy Dioring 🙂
