PRODUCT RATING: ★★★★★★★★★☆ (9/10)

SKIN TYPES: All skin types.

QUICK ROAR:  A surprising HIT from Origins that left my skin super smooth – with no irritation. I recommend this for combo skins who only want to use ONE face product.

the REVIEW (3/3/2011): I literally packed up my toddler and dashed 20 miles to the mall to buy a full size bottle of this after my sample ran out this morning. Origins Plantscription™ Anti-Aging Serum ($55) will undoubtedly be the surprise anti-aging hit this season, because frankly – it does something to your skin fairly quickly. Allure Magazine (February 2011) featured this in their “The Super Naturals” story (See excerpt below) and since I’ve always wanted the benefits of retinoids without the downtime, I knew it was a product I had to try. The lovely ladies at the Ala Moana Origins store (Its always so CLEAN in there! I love it!) called me when the samples came in, and I ever so skeptically began my trial.

The serum is fairly standard – more like a lightweight lotion vs. a watery or viscous serum. It has a pleasant and subtle herbal scent and sinks into the skin quickly. Ever so dedicated to giving Plantscription™ a fair shot – I used it, religiously, AM and PM for a week. After seeing “dimethicone” as an ingredient, I was ready to experience a flaming breakout within a few days (like I did with the Peter Thomas Roth Laser-Free Resurfacer).  From day one, no peeling (an every so slight flaking after day 3), no irritation, no itching, no breakouts (in fact my breakouts are healing!). I wake up in the morning (after very little sleep…see “my toddler” in line one of this review) and my skin is smooth, smooth, smooth. Remember, I am a Cosmetic Monster – so I also use an arsenal of scrubs and masks, but this has taken my skin to a new level, especially by refining the appearance of my pores.

the UPDATE: (3/20/2011): To say I am not product loyal would be a huge understatement. Rarely do I find cause to adhere to any regimen or feel inclined to continue using a product beyond a few weeks at a time. I’m a bit over 4 weeks into using the Origins Plantscription somewhat religiously (I did “cheat” with the new La Mer Radiance Serum a few times) and I have to say that the overall cumulative improvement is quite stunning.  Since I don’t have deeper lines and wrinkles, its really hard to say how much improvement there was – but I can say with some conviction that there was a definite visible improvement. There isn’t a lot of improvement in my sun spots – but

Now keep in mind that my skin is in no way deprived. Its well cared for – if anything, its overly cared for. LOL. It is my educated hypothesis that the more desperate your skin is – the more dramatic your results will be from this product. I would easily recommend this to skin care er, challenged, women who want to care for their skin but can’t find the time. A good cleanser, Plantscription, a sunblock for day time and an eye cream and you’re good to go.

FOR WRINKLES Origins Plantscription Anti-Aging Serum:

* Over 80 percent naturally derived.

Dermatologists dole out prescription retinoids like pediatricians do lollipops. Why? They’re guaranteed to make more collagen, which, along with elastin, keeps skin looking young. But retinoids sometimes cause flaking and itching. Origins’ company studies found that this serum is 88 percent as effective as a prescription retinoid at visibly reducing wrinkles, with no irritation.

KEY NATURALS: Extracts from Anogeissus tree bark help skin generate more fibrillin, a protein needed to form elastin and prevent sagging. Siegesbeckia (an Asian shrub) and rosemary extracts stimulate collagen and elastin repair.

WHAT IT DOESN’T CONTAIN: Parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, PABA, petrolatum, paraffin or animal ingredients.

THE RESULTS: When applied twice daily, the gel-like serum reduced lines and wrinkles by 51 percent after 4 weeks and 57 percent after 3 months. Doctors also noted a 41 percent improvement in firmness after 12 weeks.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY: “I prescribe retinoids because they work, but I often see women stop using them before the results are optimized, due to irritation and redness,” says Marcus McFerren, a dermatologist and ethnobotanist who was commissioned to review the Origins studies but has no additional financial interest in the product. “this serum is nearly as effective at reducing lines and wrinkles as a prescription, without the same discomfort. Frankly, I’m suprised at how comparable the results are.” Dermatologist Jeannette Graf sums it up nicely: “All in all, it’s a good marriage of science and nature.”

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:Although it’s not a prescription, in just 4 weeks nature’s next generation power plant noticeably reduces wrinkle length & depth. Without the irritation. Visibly helps repair the vertical fret lines between your eyes, the stubborn furrows across your forehead and the deepening frownies that frame your mouth. Youthful “bounce” is revived. Skin is clinically firmer, smoother and more lifted-looking. And with continued use, results improve.  What will nature think of next!” – Origins

MONSTER BITES: Anogeissus leiocarpa  – Anogeissus works in the same area in the skin that prescription wrinkle medications and lasers target. It penetrates deep within the skin to block destructive enzymes that weaken skin’s elasticity, and encourages production of new fibrillin to keep skin looking youthful, lifted and lineless.
