HELENA RUBINSTEIN

LASH QUEEN MASCARA – SEXY BLACKS WATERPROOF

“Push-up volume, provocative curves.” – Helena Rubinstein

PRODUCT RATING:★★★★★★★★☆☆ (8/10)

PRICE DETAILS: .2oz. $36 (Gold tube with 3D lace detail)

QUICK REVIEW: Not sure if its worth $36, but its the prettiest mascara tube ever made – with a solid waterproof formula and unique brush.

the REVIEW (04/24/2011): Hello, my name is Monster and I have a mascara addiction. This is the second $36 mascara I’ve purchased over the last few months. The DiorShow 360 was the other which was a monumental disappointment. Helena Rubinstein Lash Queen Sexy Blacks Waterproof caught my eye on a recent shopping trip at the Waikiki DFS – its beautiful brushed gold and black lace packaging is gorgeous and very unique. Here’s the catcher – Helena Rubinstein’s parent company is L’Oreal. So what we’re looking at are similar formulas to those put out by L’Oreal Paris (Voluminous $7.29), Lancome (Hypnose $25) and Armani (Eyes to Kill $30).

So the question isn’t “Is Lash Queen a good mascara” but rather “Is it worth the inflated price?”. Here are some comparison photographs:

Helena Rubinstein Lash Queen Sexy Blacks Waterproof (2 coats)

Lash Queen held the curl fairly well and did not smudge or fade throughout the day. I really liked the hourglass shaped brush and it was easy to apply without getting it on my eye lid. While it did a fair job separating my lashes, they did have a more spiky look – and wasn’t completely clump free.

Maybelline Volume Express One by One Waterproof

The cheapest mascara I had in my stash at the time was Maybelline Volume Express One by One Waterproof mascara which is one of my favorite drugstore products. It also does a great job holding the curl, separating and was relatively smudge resistant.

the VERDICT: Amongst my favorite mascaras, Lash Queen holds its own but while it performs well and looks spectacular on a vanity, it can’t justify the price. Still, its my current favorite and is kept immaculate by keeping it in its box when I’m not using it. It more than likely will not be a repurchase since I can get a similar effect for much less.
