the REVIEW 05/20/2011: Skin MD (a California 21st Century Formulations brand) submitted Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion for review consideration along with samples of their Skin MD Natural + SPF 15. Prior to them contacting me, I had never heard of Skin MD or their products. I admit I approached the review with slight reservations. Honestly, at first glance, I didn’t like their website. I’m not a fan of stock photos – especially of people. How shallow of me. However, after a few more clicks, I appreciate that their products are Eco Friendly and manufactured in a 100% Solar Facility. That’s pretty darn cool – and cost efficient! They also openly list their ingredients and base most of their marketing on reviews from blogs like Cosmetic Monster, to real testimonials from users. Seriously, I can do without the photos of eczema, but it effectively portrays what Skin MD may do for its sufferers.
the PRODUCT: The texture of Natural Shielding Lotion is a lightweight lotion with a distinctive silicone feel which seems to absorb into the skin, but I believe evaporates and leaves behind a barely detectable layer on the skin. There’s really nothing special in the formula – a fair amount of botanical extracts in a water/silicone base with Methyl Gluceth-20, a water soluble emollient and humectant. Very similar to Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion in both feel and effect. Natural Shielding Lotion has a very “cosmetic” slightly floral/powdery scent – even if it doesn’t have any added fragrance. Thankfully it disappears quickly since its not my favorite – I would have preferred no scent – but since its coming from the herbal/floral extracts, its something I can deal with.
The Skin MD Natural + SPF 15 had a slightly heavier texture (probably due to the addition of sunscreen ingredients) and smelled like, well, sunscreen. It was lighter in feel than most – but with only SPF 15, doesn’t provide enough protection for outdoor activities – although it may be sufficient for daily use if you’re just in and out.
the RESULTS: I really really really wish I had this lotion when my daughter was a baby. She had bad eczema on her inner arms, face and other parts of her body. Eczema is not contagious, but it is a very persistent skin condition. Luckily, she has outgrown the worst of it and only gets it on her inner arms – but once she gets a flare, it takes weeks, sometimes months before we get it under control (if only we could get kids to stop scratching!). Serendipitously, I received Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion just on the onset of a flare – so she became the Cosmetic Monster “guinea pig”.
As you can see, her relatively minor eczema cleared up nicely within 2 weeks. It didn’t do too much for the itching that normally accompanies eczema and we’re not sure how it does at preventing the skin from erupting. Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion did do a nice job at helping the skin heal faster however, and is a nice alternative to medicated creams.
The bottle sat on my desk between applications – and since I wash my hands a lot during the day, they have a tendency to get dry. Harsh hand soaps (like the orange Dial one that’s used in a lot of restrooms) wreck my hands, making them dry, flaky and itchy. Since the bottle of Skin MD was sitting next to me – I started using it on my hands. Aside from the smell, its an excellent hand cream. Zero residue. Even a bit better than the Clinica Ivo Pitanguy Hands Beauty Formula ($105) which also resides at my desk.
So my attitude toward the undiscriminating white plastic bottle started to change. Since my biggest dry skin issue is my feet (from walking bare foot on wood flooring) I decided this was the next test. There are lots of foot creams and ointments that do a great job at softening and improving the look and feel of dry, cracking skin on the feet. While this may be – I normally HATE putting anything oily or heavy on my feet. Seriously, its very warm here and I am not walking around with socks. I’ve even tried the special coated socks that help keep moisture in while you sleep – and by morning, they’re on the bedroom floor. Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion worked great on my feet – especially since I didn’t mind having it on. Zero residue. Bonus.
The last test. The face. Normally moisturizers are a little more body-part specific since the skin varies in thickness, texture and exposure. Face creams are too light for the body, body creams too heavy for the face. Since Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion is decidedly NOT a regular moisturizer, but one that creates a barrier on top of the skin – it worked well after applying a face serum to “seal” in the benefits. One additional benefit was it also worked very well under makeup since it has a primer like feel and composition. It did not make my face itch or break out. Its not my favorite face care product, but gets the job done in a pinch.
So, what started out as what I was sure to be a boring review – actually produced an interestingly simple product with many uses, far exceeding any expectation (or lack of expectations) that I had. Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion, while not a completely unique formula, manages to find a niche in the skin care population with a moderately priced, effective and multi-purpose lotion.
SKIN MD NATURAL SHIELDING LOTION DETAILS:
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: Shielding lotion is a new scientific approach to dry skin care based on improving the skin’s natural functions. Shampoos, antibacterial soaps, cosmetics, fragrances, colorants and other irritants bombard and penetrate the skin. These harsh chemicals and irritants can break down the skin’s natural protective ability. Some strip away moisture, while others lodge in the pores where they cause irritation and other negative reactions.
Skin MD Natural™ is a state-of-the-art shielding lotion designed to duplicate the skin’s own protective barrier helping to protect skin against damaging irritants while providing hours of non-greasy moisture. This makes Skin MD Natural the ideal choice for dry skin treatment over other lotions for dry skin.
Conventional dry skin lotions don’t protect against the causes of dry skin and have only one basic goal – to make up for the moisture that our bodies are losing by adding an artificial source of moisture. Replace your old dry skin lotion with Skin MD Natural lotion for naturally healthy skin.
DIRECTIONS: Apply small amount, initially every 2-8 hours until moisture level improves, then just once every 12-24 hours.
SKIN MD NATURAL SHIELDING LOTION INGREDIENTS: Deionized water (Aqua), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract (Aloe Vera), Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Methyl Gluceth-20, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Arnica Montana Flower Extract (Arnica), Symphytum Officinale Leaf Extract (Comfrey), Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract (Chamomile), Achillea Millefolium Extract (Yarrow), Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, 1,2 Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Butylene Glycol, Aminomethyl Propanol, Phenoxyethanol.
SKIN MD NATURAL SHIELDING LOTION SPF 15 INGREDIENTS:
MONSTER ROAR!: There’s controversy about the preservative phenoxyethanol, which is used in Natural Shielding Lotion. Some websites chastised its use – but overall it seems to be relatively safe as a cosmetic preservative. I’m in no way claiming that its completely safe – but after reading several articles which argued different points – its my educated decision to use this product with confidence. I am obviously NOT a doctor or chemist – and its up to each individual consumer to do the research and reach their own conclusion.
