Ellis Faas: Brand Review

ELLIS FAAS COSMETICSELLIS FAAS HUMAN COLOURS - PRODUCTS“Ellis Faas based the whole collection of her brand on the colours that by nature exist in every human body.” – Ellis Faas Cosmetics

FINAL COLLECTION RATING: ★★★★★★★★☆☆(8/10)

When I discovered Ellis Faas in Vogue (April 2010) I was initially intrigued by the packaging, cool bullet shaped pens that are housed neatly (be still my OCD) in a silver metal-esque canister. Upon further investigation, what convinced me to drop several hundred dollars on a handful of products was Ellis Faas’ concept of creating colors based on the human palette. “From the tawny peach of a freckle to the pure, vivid red that pulses through our veins”…I think its taking the original Bobbi Brown idea of brown based colors and yellow undertone foundation to a whole new level.

The Ellis Faas website definitely reflects the artist’s creative side which leans toward the avant-garde, which is a contrast to the straight forward presentation of the actual product its selling. That is my opinion however, as I’m not a huge fan of putting theatrical and practical in the same box – based on the website images, I would think Ellis Faas was a brand more akin to the likes of MAKE UP FOR EVER or Illamasqua. Not a bad comparison, but may lead to a slight disappointment when you get to the genius natural shade selection.

Natural, everyday shades are probably your best bet to purchase from this line, because Ellis Faas products are not cheap. A Holder which houses up to 6 bullets, a Skin Veil Pen and a Pressed Powder, would cost about $341, depending on your combination of products. Color products run from $30 – $38 and the Skin Veil Pen is a whopping $65 for .47oz. – putting it solidly in the same price point category as luxury lines like Cle de Peau and La Prairie.

Putting any apprehension about price aside, I enjoyed my Ellis Faas experience immensely. That said, there are a few areas of concern for me when it comes to the design/concpt of Ellis Faas. I adore the Holder concept – it kept my makeup bag uncluttered and organized on a recent trip and the accurate swatch labels make it easy to find what you need at home. What I did not like is having to twist the bottom to get the product I want. It would have made more sense to have the bullets sticking out to make them easy to grab vs. having them flush. The pens also don’t dispense evenly, often wasting valuable product in the process and I really wish the pens were refillable. Throwing an empty bullet away seems like a huge waste. Environmentally speaking.

Function aside, the formulations of Ellis Faas products redeems the packaging issues. Let’s take a closer look at the Ellis Faas collection.

the COLLECTION:

ELLIS HOLDER

PRODUCT RATING: ★★★★★★★★(8/10)

PRICE DETAILS: $35 – Holds 6 bullets, 1 Skin Veil and 1 Pressed Powder. Lightweight plastic with hard faux metal exterior.

the REVIEW: Other than a few design modifications like getting rid of the retracting feature, the Ellis Holder is what makes the brand unique. It keeps me organized and neat on trips and at home and being able to see the swatch labels make choosing products a snap. Still, if you don’t travel and are just going to have a few products on hand – this is not a necessity.

ELLIS FAAS CREAMY EYES E104, E107, E108

PRODUCT RATING: ★★★★★★★★(8/10)

PRICE DETAILS: .08oz. for $36 (Twist automatic pen dispenser with short brush tip)

SHADES REVIEWED: E104 (Dark cool toned bark brown), E107 (True matte taupe/gray), E108 (Light matte skin tone ochre)

ELLIS FAAS CREAMY EYES E104, E107, E108
E108, E104, E107

the QUICK REVIEW: Creamy eyes is a semi-opaque matte cream to “powder” shadow that comes in an Ellis Faas bullet with a brush applicator tip. The formula has a rich, thicker consistency in comparison to other liquid/cream shadows and are surprisingly easy to apply and blend. Of the colors I chose, E104 has proven the most versatile, its rich bark brown tone provides a great base for a smokey eye, is easy to use as a natural looking eye liner (applied with the pen) and even a neutral brow color. E108 is a good standard base color for darker skin tones or as a natural lid color for pale skin tones. I did have some issue with E107 – which I intended as a contour color, was a smidgen too light for my Summer skin tone. I was surprised that the visible grayish undertone did not make my eyes look tired but rather worked well as a quick lid color.

ELLIS FAAS LIGHTS

ELLIS FAAS LIGHTSPRODUCT RATING: ★★★★★★★★(9/10)

PRICE DETAILS:  .08oz. for $42 (Twist automatic pen dispenser with brush tip)

SHADE REVIEWED: E303 (Metallic bronze gold)

the QUICK REVIEW: Rich metallic eyes never go out of style and Ellis Faas Lights take this concept to a sparkling new dimension. While similar to Creamy Eyes, Lights has a more liquid texture and has a longer bristled brush applicator as well. These differences make Lights easy to paint on a dramatic metallic look or to softly blend a shimmering eye with your fingertips. A natural companion to the more skin tone correct shades in the Creamy Eyes collection, Lights includes traditional metallic shades like silver, gold and bronze – but it also comes in a spectacular lilac and holographic bordeaux.

ELLIS FAAS CREAMY LIPS

PRODUCT RATING: ★★★★★★★★(9/10)

PRICE DETAILS: .09oz for $35 (Twist automatic pen dispenser with showerhead tip)

SHADE REVIEWED: L108 (Light rosy beige)

the QUICK REVIEW: Creamy Lips by Ellis Faas  is not a long lasting lipstick – but the effects of color L108, that can best be described as a natural baby lips rosy beige, are so subtle that a heavy opaque coat wouldn’t do it justice. Its paraben-free formula is enriched with Vitamin E and features a “showerhead” applicator that makes it easy to apply to the natural contours of the lip.

ELLIS FAAS MILKY LIPS

PRODUCT RATING: ★★★★★★★★(10/10)

PRICE DETAILS: .09oz. for $35

SHADE REVIEWED: L206 (Medium nude brown with a touch of pink – a Your-Lips-But-Better shade)

the QUICK REVIEW: Milky lips L206 is my current favorite lip color. For my particular taste, it is the perfect texture and color. It is literally my lip color amplified, doesn’t make my lips look dry or “made up” but ads enough color and definition to prevent me from looking washed out. Its perfect to pair with a natural look or a smokey eye.
