“High polish for your skin. Innovative tri-blend liquid, powder, gel formula goes beyond face powder to give you a sexy, sophisticated glow.” – Estée Lauder
PRODUCT RATING: ★★★★★★★★★☆(9/10)
PRICE DETAILS: $40 for .19oz/5.5g (gold metal compact with sponge applicator)
SHADE REVIEWED: 01 Modern Mercury (golden rose shimmer)
QUICK REVIEW: When applied with a light hand, this soft “powder” gives skin a realistic luminous glow.
the REVIEW (09/05/2011): Estee Lauder often introduces the most creative and exciting makeup products under the guise of their other brands or takes a backseat, allowing their premier artists to motivate sales (e.g. The Toms – Ford and Pecheux). Their Fall 2011 collection is no exception, allowing Mr. Pecheux to again demonstrate his artistic prowess. There were two seasonal standouts in Modern Mercury, Metallic Sage nail polish which manages to be dark, dramatic and intriguing – and a touch different than other Fall nail lacquers. The second and most impressive is the Pure Color Illuminating Powder Gelée in 01 Modern Mercury (which I’m hoping will lead to an 02, 03 and beyond) – which while still leans toward the powder vs. the gelee, gives skin and eyes the much desired runway dewy look.
Don’t expect any dramatically different texture – even if the “tri-brid” product boasts a powder+liquid+gel in one formulation. For the most part, it feels like a powder. A really smooth, un-powdery, incredibly sheer but pigmented powder in a magnificently flattering and universal light rose-gold sheen. The amount of said sheen depends on application: for the most sheer finish, use a fluffy brush on eyes or cheeks; for a dramatic finish, use the enclosed applicator (works great for applying product on lower lash line) or fingertips; for all out shine, use it with a damp brush. Super shine without any dry, crepey look.
At $40, this pretty gold compact is sure to last through the next few seasons. Perfect for holiday and weather both warm and cool, this must-have goes where no other multi-tasking highlighter can. A small dab on the lower lips gives them a bit more pout, a touch on the decollete gives them a bit more dimension (ahem), a dab mixed with foundation or concealer (not both at the same time) gives said product a bit more luminescence – basically, the formulation may look like a powder, but it can also morph and perform liquid and gel functions.
the FINAL ROAR!: Lovely in presentation, lovely in performance and at a lovely price, Estee Lauder Pure Color Illuminating Powder Gelee in Modern Mercury is one of the season’s must-haves.
