Happy Birthday. Yes, happy. Even though I’m officially turning 40 on November 10, I’ve been telling everyone that I’m “almost 40” for the last year. I understand why birthdays can be unnerving since they come at you like a freight train off the rails – but I’ve managed to keep my cool. Aging happens and in spite of my best efforts, inevitable Hawaiian sun exposure, late nights and my genetic predisposition for my face succumbing to gravity – have all begun to show up (even if its a little late) to the party.

So call a bouncer (or a jar of plumping, lifting, hydrating cream), because I’m not going down without a fight! I’ve elevated my skin care expectations to include powerful anti-aging ingredients (alguronic acid, stem cells, peptides) and added a bevy of natural oils like Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil and Sibu Sea Buckthorn Oil to cram my skin with omegas. I’ll also perk up my look with a bit more cheek color (NARS Orgasm really does work!) and the prettiest sheer nude lippy that has just enough shimmer to keep my inner princess happy (Exude Lip Creme in Nude). I’ve read several times that black eye liner is a no-no, but sorry toots – a girl has to draw the line somewhere.
Aside from the obvious physical changes – there’s a emotional and psychological metamorphosis that occurs with age as well. While you never stop changing and growing, I’ve learned to appreciate my life and embrace who I’ve become. While it technically may not be so, I FEEL more attractive now than I ever did in my 20’s. There’s a certain confidence that shines through when you finally have a grasp on who you are – and a young (but wise) heart & mind speaks volumes as well. That’s something to celebrate.

Side Bar: Ironically, I’ve started receiving interesting magazines in the mail. I knew I had turned a corner when I found Cosmopolitan and its “How to Pleasure Your Man” and Guess ads annoying. What I didn’t expect was to find magazines like More and Ladies Home Journal (who had the fabulous Diane Keaton on the cover and an incredible chicken soup recipe in it to boot) to become, well, magazines that applied to me. I subscribe to Lucky (my favorite) and Allure (I’ve been reading it since it started) to indulge my passion for face paint…but I may be sending in those irritating subscription cards to my new “free” friends (thank you Dermstore).

BOBBI BROWN SIX PAN CUSTOMIZABLE PALETTE ($10 + price of products). From upper left to right – Shadows in Ivory, Taupe, Saddle, Blush in Tawny, Shadows in Rose Gold Shimmerwash and Eye Shadow in Toast. All together, this fully customized, full sized palette would be $140.
This is the perfect natural palette. With a few shade adjustments, this palette could work on anyone to create the ultimate natural look. I might consider swapping out the Rose Gold Shimmer for Caviar or NEW! Shade Black Chocolate for a more dramatic look. Otherwise, this palette can do everything from contour the entire face (Taupe mixed with a little Toast), sculpt the eyes, add a pop of color (Tawny or Rose Gold), shape the brows (from blondes to brunettes with a little blending).
My original Bobbi Brown combination: Bone, Taupe (or Sable depending on brow color), Mahogany, Tawny Blush, Nude Lipstick, Petal Gloss. This combination worked on everyone and is incredibly easy to use.
