QUICK REVIEW: There’s a reason why this beauty tool remains on the “best” lists of dermatologists, beauty editors, countless bloggers (including me!) and your friends. Once you master its how-to and determine the best duration and frequency for your skin – it will become a must-have in your skin care routine.

CLARISONIC IDEA 2the REVIEW:  Since the Clarisonic was introduced, nearly every magazine with a beauty section and respectable cosmetic blogger has mentioned, raved, praised and hailed these little white or pink (and now rainbow colored) devices as a “must-have”. While it took me a little time to jump on board – I didn’t try one until the Mia was introduced – I will never be without my (now upgraded) CLARISONIC MIA 2.

CLARISONIC ACNE SETIf you’ve never used or heard of the Clarisonic brushes – in a nutshell, they are facial cleansing tools that utilizes a patented sonic frequency (and your choice of brush head) to remove up to 6x more makeup and 2x more dirt than your trusty old hands. The newest versions (currently the Aria) have up to 3 speeds and a T-Timer® which helps you monitor how long you are cleansing each area (genius).

One of my biggest and most tenacious skin woes are greasy skin, breakouts and sensitivity. At 40 years old, I must also address aging issues with an equal amount of fervor, lest I be without blemishes but plagued with wrinkles and thin, over exfoliated skin. Using the Clarisonic Mia 2 about 2x a week with CLARISONIC ACNE DAILY CLARIFYING CLEANSER ($40) and ACNE BRUSH HEAD ($25) really helps to improve the look, feel and overall health of my skin. I would equate the results to that of a mini cleansing facial – applying a detoxifying mask after using the Clarisonic helps to elevate the results.

CLARISONIC IDEA 1I will say I agree with skin care guru Renee Rouleau [Read her blog “Is the Clarisonic Brush Harmful or Helpful to the Skin?”] who feels that twice daily use is a bit excessive. When I tried to ease myself into this 2x a day habit, I am always repaid with thin, dehydrated skin – and through experimentation have found that up to 2x a week works best for me, even if my skin is oily and acne prone. Since I use other exfoliating products (both physical scrubs and enzyme peels) – using the Clarisonic in conjunction with such a rigorous routine was overkill. Those with younger, oilier or more active skins may want to increase frequency (I still would use it only up to 5x a week) – while those with more delicate skin types may want to only use it 1-2x a week.

RESPONSE FROM CLARISONIC ABOUT FREQUENCY: “Thanks for the product review! We believe that the Clarisonic system is gentle enough to use 2x daily on skin, and no more than 10-20 seconds in each spot at a time. Of course, varying skin types react differently which is why it is important to reduce use of the Clarisonic if your skin is reacting sensitively. Cheers!”

The undeniable fact is even under the close scrutiny in a magnified mirror after using the CLARISONIC MIA 2 and ancillary products, pores are remarkably clear (and therefore, appear smaller) and the frequency of breakouts noticeably reduced. Other “copycat” devices do not have the same patented technology – or come with customization of being able to choose the brush head for your specific skin care needs. Since having clearer skin allows products to penetrate, using any of the Clarisonic units will make your skin care routine more effective.

CLARISONIC ACNE CLEANSER SWATCHCLARISONIC ACNE DAILY CLARIFYING CLEANSER AND BRUSH HEAD QUICK REVIEW: The 2% salicylic acid cleanser is a pale blue with a clean fragrance and lathers to a mild foam. Unlike most acne cleansers, there was no stinging or excessive dryness – I only used it 2x a week in the PM, but its so gentle, daily use shouldn’t cause any adverse reactions in those with combination/oily skin. When used with the Mia 2 and Acne Brush Head, any blemished areas were gently cleansed (over scrubbing/cleansing acne can aggravate already inflamed skin) and skin actually looked calmer and less red. I found the ACNE BRUSH HEAD to be as gentle as the DELICATE BRUSH HEAD – but those with more black heads and clogged pores might like the DEEP PORE CLEANSING BRUSH HEAD. The system works particularly well on clogged pores, white heads and prevention of acne – but a topical treatment is still needed for existing blemishes.
