I don’t know much about fashion other than Project Runway re-runs, but I do know that Tom Ford’s designs are impeccable, edgy and injected with just the right amount of sex appeal. [SEE THE TOM FORD SPRING/SUMMER 2013 COLLECTION HERE]. What I am familiar with is his collaborations with Estee Lauder, the first collection in particular (Amber Nude) which in my opinion was the best collection of all time. The Lacquer (a brilliant nude) and Bronzer (which I scraped clean) are the standards to which all others are held.
So, its with enormously inflated expectations that I dropped my $75 (on my birthday) for the TOM FORD EYE COLOR QUAD IN COCOA MIRAGE at Neiman Marcus in Ala Moana (Hawaii). The counter itself is gorgeous – sleek and sexy, each product proudly displayed like a work of art. Product Specialist Stephen Kalama (who has worked at Prescriptives, Estee Lauder, Laura Mercier and most recently at Giorgio Armani) heads the most exciting brand to hit Hawaii since Shu Uemura. He is warm, talented and one of the most popular artists in Neiman Marcus.
When I saw Cocoa Mirage, which has the perfect selection of mattes and one slightly shimmery accent color – it was an easy pick. It literally has the colors I would choose for a perfect palette (maybe if the taupe was a tad more camel toned…) The texture of these shadows are incredibly smooth and pigmented – yet easy to blend and layer. The taupe brown can be used on the brows and crease, the matte bone makes a good base for other shadows, the rich brown can be used to soften liner or create a more dramatic contour. I particularly love the chocolate brown shimmer which can be used to smoke the eye.
Every aspect of this palette – down to the adorable TF logo applicators exceeded my expectations. I truly did not think it would be worth the $75 price tag – but I’ll be adding at least 2 more palettes to my collection, and would pay more for these amazing shadows.
WHO HAS THE MOST EXPENSIVE EYE SHADOW? Cle de Peau’s Quad rings in at $80, La Prairie is a modest $70, Sisley Paris single shadows are $47 and Guerlain Ecrin Eye Shadow Palettes are a whopping $85.
The TOM FORD EYE COLOR QUAD IN COCOA MIRAGE can easily be touted as the ideal basic eye shadow palette. There are no fun trend colors – but each shade is equally useful without one dud in the bunch. The detailing on the packaging makes the visual experience a luxury as well.
