QUICK REVIEW: Unique rice bran based formula cleans and exfoliates, leaving all skin types baby soft and smooth. A bit pricey, but the effective formula and gorgeous thoughtful packaging justify the price.
Aside from their controversial history, Geisha of Japan have been synonymous with flawless, porcelain skin (mochi hada which refers to the quality of a baby’s skin) and revered beauty. Tatcha has thoughtfully recreated the simple ritual that offers modern day women the gift of pure, polished, radiant and supple skin.
Step Two in the Tatcha Ritual is the Polished Rice Enzyme Powder that is available in three skin type specific formulas: Gentle (normal – dry/sensitive), Classic (normal- combination) and Deep (normal – oily). All three formulas start as a powder and turn into a smoothing low-foam cream when mixed with water. Each has a very mild rice scent and does not contain any artificial fragrance.
Each formula contains Tatcha’s HADASEI-3 Bioactive Complex which consists of Red Algae (enhances skin’s barrier function), Rice Bran (anti-oxidant/moisturizer – considered hypoallergenic) and Green Tea (antioxidant). The individual formulas also feature a unique ingredient. Gentle – calming Licorice Root, Classic – conditioning Pearl Etract, Deep – detoxifying Dokudami (which has anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties).
Polished gets its exfoliating properties from Papain, an enzyme derived from papayas, it is a gentle exfoliator which eliminates dead skin cells with less irritation that traditional scrubs or acids.
Prepare yourself for the price. At $65, Tatcha Polished is not cheap. That said, the jar is absolutely gorgeous – down to the raised seal (which I can only assume is a Mon – or Japanese symbol to identify a family or organization). The heavyweight plastic jar looks and feels like glass and adds to its sophistication. The only downside – though I can’t think of a better method, is the sliding dispenser that made it cumbersome to use at the sink or shower. It was also difficult to shake out the proper amount and prevent waste – I often ended up with too much. Still, its worth the effort.
I began my Tatcha adventure with the Tatcha Sampler Set, which originally had 3 packets of each Polished formula and deluxe sizes of the Pure | One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil, Radiant | Deep Brightening Serum and Supple | Moisture Rich Silk Cream. I originally ordered the Deep formula since it is more akin to my skin type (combination-oily with breakouts). After trying the Gentle formula, however, I ordered it as well since it had a more positive effect on my skin and was gentle enough to use 2x a day.
HOW TO CHOOSE A FORMULA: Choose the formula for your skin type (Gentle – dry/sensitive, Classic – normal/combination, Deep – combination/oily) or start with the Sampler Set to experience each formula. If you have active acne, consult a dermatologist or start with the Gentle formula. Dry and sensitive skin should start with 1x a day for 10 seconds and gradually increase frequency and duration. See PRODUCT DETAILS below for recommended application and tips.
Provided that you use a cleansing oil to remove any excess oils and makeup prior to application, Tatcha Polished Rice Enzyme Powder leaves skin silky smooth with no irritation. After using the Gentle formula for 3 days AM & PM along with the other steps, my skin was noticeably smoother and more balanced. I continue to use the Gentle formula in the AM about 3x a week and boost my ever changing routine with the Deep formula once a week to deeply exfoliate without worrying if its going to over strip or irritate my skin. It also works wonders when used prior to using a facial mask by removing any dead skin that might hinder absorption.
Tatcha Polished | Rice Enzyme Powder ($65, tatcha.com) is a must-have for those who want a unique and effective cleansing/exfoliating experience, or for those who cannot use traditional peels or scrubs. I encourage those interested in trying this glorious skin care routine to experience the products in the Sampler Set before purchasing full sized products – although this product is sure to have you hooked.

RECOMMENDED APPLICATION: This gentle daily exfoliant doubles as a cleanser when you are not wearing makeup and can be used morning and night. Pour 1 teaspoon’s worth into wet hands and run hands together to turn the powder into a creamy foam. Gently massage onto a wet face, avoiding eye area for 10 seconds and rinse away with warm water. If you would like a deeper exfoliation, you may work your way up to one minue on the skin over time. However, this is a very active product that does not require a lengthy time on the skin or hard scrubbing to leave the skin polished and bright. The rice and papaya enzymes work to release debris from the skin without burning, tingling or harsh abrasives. Discontinue use if irritation occurs. Patch testing is recommended. (Source: Tatcha)
