“If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”
For the most part, I consider myself a “polite” person (in public anyway) – and part of this means biting my tongue. A lot. Reading over my catalog of reviews has lead the the realization that there is an obvious discomfort to being negative about products. While I don’t think its beneficial to only review “bad” products – I make a vow to try to include more products that just didn’t live up to my expectations.
That said, I must issue a public apology to Maybelline Great Lash mascara. For years I’ve been listing it as one of the worst beauty products ever. Upon further review, I’ve come to like the little pink and green tube (original formula, original brush) and have since changed my review in THE MASCARA DIARIES.
This month, I will complete my
TOP TEN TO TRASH feature – and get over my discomfort to truthfully unveil a list of bad beauty products. (Note: LOL. I just can’t do it. It’s taking too much energy to think about bad products!) Be sure to watch for my NEW! FLASH REVIEWS section where I’ll be able to get quick product reviews out there faster.

PANTONE COLOR OF THE YEAR 2013: EMERALD 17-5641. Maybe its a coincidence that Pantone’s Color of the Year is perfectly coordinated with Disney’s Oz the Great and Powerful – or maybe its marketing genius. Sephora + Pantone has recently released an entire collection based literally on shade 17-5641. Urban Decay has also launched two limited edition palettes based on the prequel to the famous movie – named after the two witches, Glinda and Theodora. While I’m not personally a fan of green in excess (all I envision is the Wicked Witch of the West) – using it as an accent color adds an interesting pop of color.
☆ PANTENE ULTIMATE 10 BB CREME ($6.27, walmart.com). I was prepared to be disappointed by this “BB Cream” for the hair – but it really does make hair softer and shinier. LIVING PROOF AMP | Instant Texture Volumizer ($24, sephora.com). My new favorite texturizer – Get touchable texture plus amplified volume and flexible hold for that perfectly imperfect look (without any sticky or greasy feel). BOBBI BROWN LONG-WEAR EVEN FINISH COMPACT FOUNDATION ($46, nordstrom.com or bobbibrowncosmetics.com). Bobbi’s amazing Even Finish formula in a fuss-free compact disappears on skin to impeccably match your complexions texture and tone. SEPHORA + PANTONE UNIVERSE COLOR CHARGED GRAPHIC LACQUER IN EMERALD ($10, sephora.com). I grew up in the 80’s, so bold color, particularly on the nails and eyes, forces me into an unwelcome state of nostalgia. Still, this sassy lacquer is interesting and if done without any embellishments, can reflect a certain trendy sophistication. ORIGINS PLANTSCRIPTION SPF 25 ANTI-AGING CREAM ($55, origins.com or sephora.com). This creamy SPF 25 moisturizer helps improve skin firmness and boosts moisture levels with Anogeissus and stem cells. Also available in oil-free.
JO MALONE SUGAR & SPICE COLLECTION ($60, nordstrom.com). This limited edition collection inspired by “moments of delicious pleasure” includes (L-R): Bitter Orange & Chocolate, Ginger Biscuit, Redcurrant & Cream, Elderflower & Gooseberry and Lemon Tart.
I am a BIG fan of Jo Malone fragrances – my husband uses Grapefruit (love) and I use the Sweet Almond & Macaroon Deluxe Candle when I need a pick me up. I imagine these fragrances to be incredibly sophisticated and yet playful – and I absolutely love the colored tops and labels.
