In the March 2013 issue of Allure Magazine, on-the-cover celebrity Mila Kunis laments about her “soccer-mom hairuct” and how “…it looked like sh*t.”. I suppose if you’re a gorgeous 29 year old actress, looking like a Soccer Mom (shriek!) can be horrifying. Actually, I guess that’s not a good thing – ever.
← (L-R): Me, Louise and Judy at the W Hotel in Honolulu (Circa 2000?) Louise is now the mother of two and basically looks exactly the same. Judy is now a black belt in Kung Fu.
At 28 (approximate age in this photo) – I was singing in a ska-rock band, surfing every chance I had, working as a makeup artist and single. Aside from having no time to do a manicure (and these days – no pedicure), 2 additional pants sizes, dark circles and the introduction of digital cameras – after a decade of experimentation, I have oddly morphed back to this version of myself.
I mix a drop or two of Marula Oil ($58, sephora.com) with Omorovicza Intensive Hydra-Lifting Cream ($225, omorovicza.com) to keep skin looking young and line free. Read more Cosmetic Monster Mash Ups for Glowing Skin→
But I guess I’m technically a Soccer Mom – although my kids don’t play soccer (the 3 year old shows promise, so there’s hope). In all honesty though, I know what Mila Kunis meant. Everyone wants to be the Hot Mom or at least the I-Can’t-Believe-You’re-A-Mom. I think I look like Happy Mom these days (dark circles and all) and that’s just fine by me.

As an ex-makeup artist (I don’t think just doing your own makeup qualifies you as an artist) – I’ve pared my usual daily eye makeup routine down to 1 shadow. 3 Custom Color Specialists Eye Shadow in Warm Camel ($17.50 refill, dermstore.com) is the base of my monochromatic look. All I do is shade my lids from lash line to eye socket, add some smudged liner (its more complicated than it sounds – I use about 4 products for this) and several coats of mascara. The look takes about 5 minutes (I used to take 30 minutes to do a full eye look) and lasts all day (this photo was taken about 12 hours after it was applied with no touch ups – I had an early morning).
(L-R): KBSHIMMER PASTEL ME MORE NAIL POLISH ($8.75, kbshimmer.com). I just discovered this brand (thank you Temptalia!) and ordered this and Clown Puke which is a brighter version of Pastel Me More. JOSIE MARAN ARGAN INFINITY CREAM INTENSIVE CREAMY OIL ($28, sephora.com). This truly multi-purpose has a unique cream-oil texture which allows it to be used on the hair, body, face, hands and as a transformer for lip color, eye shadow and other cosmetics. MARCELLE BB CREAM GOLDEN GLOW ($27, birchbox.com). I know – you’re tired of BB Creams – but I got a generous sample of this in my March Birchboxand so far I’m loving this fragrance-free, slightly golden toned all-in-one! Available in the US exclusively at Birchbox. BENEFIT FAKE UP ($24, sephora.com). This crease-preventing concealer is an ultra-moisturizing balm with a pigmented core. I would use this to refresh and clean up under eye smudges during the day. TOO FACED SUMMER EYES ($36, toofaced.com). Déjà vu! This ultra-wearable palette makes a welcome reappearance this Summer. A brilliant combination of nudes and pops of color in matte and shimmery shades. A Summer must have.
URBAN DECAY 24/7 GLIDE-ON EYE PENCIL VAULT ($295, urbandecay.com). This gorgeous complete set of UD’s popular long-wearing eyeliner features all 40 (yes, 40!!) shades, including 13 all-new shades plus 15 shades that were previously exclusive to sets!
Will I invest in this set? Probably not – I already own 11 shades. I will be adding Roach (deep copper brown shimmer) and Ether (pale smoky gray shimmer w/violet & fuchsia micro-sparkle) to my collection.
HOW TO WEAR IT: If you were fortunate enough to obtain this literal rainbow of liners and wondering how to wear the more unusual shades – just layer them over a contrasting neutral shade (Stash – a dark green gold with Freak – a bright green shimmer). Keeping a deeper neutral near the lash line keeps the eyes defined while allowing the bright shade to stand out.
