ORIGINS MEGA BRIGHT COLLECTION

ORIGINS MEGA-BRIGHT COLLECTION

COLLECTION RATING: ★★★★★★★★☆ (8/10)

COLLECTION: Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Bright Skin Illuminating Cleanser, Skin Illuminating Treatment Lotion, Skin Illuminating Serum and Skin Illuminating Moisturizer.

NOTE: In the US, serum is called Skin Tone Correcting Serum. Other products are not yet available in the US market, but can be found at select travel retail locations like DFS Galleria Waikiki.

PRICE DETAILS: See individual products for price detail.

SKIN TYPE: All Skin Types

KEY FEATURES: Nature’s radiant Rosa Roxburghii complex helps correct visible discoloration and quell irritation to help prevent it from reappearing. Formulated without parabens, phythalates, propylene glycol, mineral oil, PABA, petrolatum, parrafin, DEA synthetic color, synthetic fragrance or animal ingredients.

QUICK REVIEW: The serum is the obvious star product in this easy to use, straight forward brightening line. You will see more translucent, glowing skin – just don’t expect dramatic results.

COSMETIC REVIEWS

COSMETIC PRODUCT REVIEWSORIGINS MEGA BRIGHT SKIN ILLUMNATING REGIMEN Living in Hawaii, one thing is inevitable. Sun exposure. Even the most vigilant sunblock user will encounter some spectrum of UVA or UVB. Add two children, birth control and being Asian (and more prone to hyper-pigmentation). This equals a galaxy of blotches and spots including sun spots, melasma and acne scars. My skin needed some serious brightening.

Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Bright products promise to show a dramatic improvement in skin tone in just 4 weeks. By the “After” photo (@ 19 days) I already saw more even skin tone, smaller pores, less oil and an overall glow. Did it get rid of my darkest spots? No. Dramatic? Not really. But I believe Mega-Bright is excellent for preventing pigmentation issues, brightening overall skin tone and for maintenance after using hydroquinone and other skin lightening products that are not recommended for long term use.

the ROUTINE: To get the full effect, I purchased the Mega-Bright Skin Illuminating Cleanser ($27.50) and Mega-Bright Skin Illuminating Treatment Lotion ($30) as companions to the serum and moisturizer. Other than the serum, Mega-Bright products are not available in the US (yet) – but can be purchased at select travel retail locations like DFS Galleria Waikiki. Essentially I used the cleanser, lotion, serum and moisturizer for about 2 weeks – AM and PM.

PRODUCT RATING: ★★★★★★★☆ (7/10)

PRICE DETAILS: $27.50 for 5 fl.oz. ($5.50/oz.)  (♦♦♦♦♦)

PRESENTATION: Pale green plastic squeeze tube with flip cap.

TEXTURE & SCENT: White cleansing foam with citrus/floral scent.

Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Bright Skin Illuminating Cleanser started the routine – it is a fairly standard foaming cleanser with a light fragrance and rich foam that leaves skin clean and fresh. My face felt a little dry after using this cleanser – but it wasn’t to the point of being uncomfortable. This non-active step probably won’t produce much brightening on its own – but it plays nicely with the other products in the Mega-Bright line and would work with other products as well.

ORIGINS MEGA-BRIGHT SKIN ILLUMINATING TREATMENT LOTIONMEGA-BRIGHT SKIN ILLUMINATING TREATMENT LOTION

PRODUCT RATING: ★★★★★★ (6/10)

PRICE DETAILS: $30 for 6.7 fl.oz. ($4.47/oz.)  (♦♦♦♦♦)

PRESENTATION: Plastic bottle with flip top cap

TEXTURE & SCENT: Watery toner with citrus scent.

Though Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Bright Skin Illuminating Treatment Lotion is called a lotion – it is essentially a toner step. It preps skin to receive treatments that follow. Of the four products, I liked this one the least – but I’m not a big fan of toner/lotion. It does do a nice job of balancing the skin after using the cleanser which is a tiny bit drying (like most clean rinsing cleansing foams). This watery (slightly tan) “lotion”  has a more citrus scent (orange peel oil) and on occasion, made my skin feel a little itchy. This is common with me and toners that have too much fragrance (synthetic or not). It didn’t give me a rash though, so I will keep using it.

PRODUCT RATING: ★★★★★★★★ (9/10)

PRICE DETAILS: $55 for 1 fl.oz. ($55/oz.)  (♦♦♦♦♦)

PRESENTATION: Plastic pump bottle

TEXTURE & SCENT: Medium textured but lightweight serum with a natural citrus/floral scent.

ORIGINS MEGA-BRIGHT SWATCHESDr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Bright Skin Illuminating Serum (or Skin Tone Correcting Serum in US market) has a medium weight texture similar to Estee Lauder Idealist Even Skin Tone Illuminator or Lancome Visionnaire. The serum has a faint herbal floral scent (non-synthetic) that may be a little strong to those with sensitive noses – but dissipates rather quickly. This is the star product of the collection.

After application – I leave skin a little damp from the lotion (toner) before applying – my skin immediately looks more fresh and alive. It didn’t feel heavy or greasy and worked well under makeup. After about 19 days of consistently using this slightly iridescent serum AM & PM – I noticed my skin looked more calm, translucent and luminous. Yes, spots were still there, but the overall look of my skin did indeed improve.

Dramatic results? Not yet. I don’t expect this product is capable of ridding my face of the more prominent spots, but I’m sure with time, it would bring skin to its best without any harsh ingredients, peeling or irritation.

ORIGINS MEGA-BRIGHT SKIN ILLUMINATING MOISTURIZERMEGA-BRIGHT SKIN ILLUMINATING MOISTURIZER

PRODUCT RATING: ★★★★★★★★☆ (8/10)

PRICE DETAILS: $49.50 for 1.7 fl.oz. ($29.11/oz.) (♦♦♦♦♦)

PRESENTATION: Plastic Jar

TEXTURE & SCENT: Lightweight gel cream with slight citrus/floral scent.

Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Bright Skin Illuminating Moisturizer is a great companion to the serum – but its lightweight gel-cream texture is more suited for combination – oily skin. I liked using it as a day cream since it doesn’t feel greasy and worked well under my powder foundation, but as a night time product, I prefer something a little more nourishing.

It has a similar scent like the serum and absorbs well upon application. While I think the serum would perform well on its own, the moisturizer offered just enough hydration and supported the brightening effects. Those with oilier skin who are trying to rid themselves of minor acne discoloration would appreciate its super light texture.

Rosa Roxburghii

ROSA ROXBURGHII – The fruit of this luminous rose is known to be a rich source of vitamins A, C and E and essential fatty acids vital for protection against environmental damage. This is extremely important because these factors can trigger the formation of dark spots and discoloration. (Source: Origins)

Essentially, Rosa Roxburchii or the Chestnut Rose has antioxidant properties. It is listed in the middle of all four product ingredient lists.

THE FINAL ROARWhile I think the companion products to Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Bright (cleanser and toner) are a just standard and the moisturizer too lightweight for most skin types, I will continue to use the serum and would consider repurchasing it. There has definitely been an improvement in the overall look of my skin (more so than can be seen in the photos).  I will be starting the Rodan + Fields Reverse line which contains 2% Hydroquinone – and intend on using Origins Mega-Bright and La Mer Blanc de la Mer products to maintain results and keep skin glowing.
