QUICK REVIEW: This BB cream performs virtual magic – skin looks more even, softer, more vibrant and perfected. Plus it lasts all day, doesn’t look heavy and doesn’t have sunscreen to irritate my sensitive skin (I use a separate sunscreen).
With all the different BB Creams on the market, in truth, they are all glorified tinted moisturizers and primers that offer inconsistent levels of coverage and color choices. Most of them are far too pale and ashy for those with medium to darker skin tones, particularly those with yellow undertones. When Marcelle BB Cream Golden Glow was received as part of the March Birchbox, my expectations were very low. I expected it to be too pasty, too glittery and too silicone-y (LOL).
To my pleasant surprise, Golden Glow is the complete opposite. It is a BB Cream gold standard. In spite of the inclusion of silicones in its formula, it hasn’t made me breakout or clogged my pores. The welcome absence of sunscreen allows me to use it daily without fear of a rash (I’m allergic to most sunscreens). It has, in truth, replaced my use of liquid or cream foundations all together without having to sacrifice perfected skin. Love.
THE BENEFITS BREAKDOWN:
1. Gives skin an instant glow.
From the first application, my skin looked luminous without looking glittery. If you look closely at a baby’s skin – it has a slight “shimmer” to it (I swear). Golden Glow adds THAT kind of glow – and is as close to the look of baby’s skin as this 40 year old is ever going to get!
2. Evens out the skin tone.
The yellow undertone corrected most of the redness and diffused spots. When it first comes out of the tube, it looks like a traditional foundation. When blended onto the skin, it actually delivers more of a translucent/light coverage that still corrects uneven skin tone and redness – minus any chalky or heavy appearance.
3. Offers immediate and long-term hydrating benefits.
The texture has an emollient feel, but was not enough to stand on its own. Oilier skins might find the hydration sufficient, however, drier or more needy skin might feel more comfortable using a traditional moisturizer prior to application.
4. Protects skin from premature aging and environmental stresses.
There isn’t any proven or dominant antioxidants in the formula (besides a bit of Vitamin E and a few extracts) and there isn’t any sunscreen benefits. That said, for the best daily protection, a specific antioxidant and/or sunscreen product should be used prior to application.
5. Strengthens skin by moisturization.
There’s hyaluronic acid and aloe listed in the ingredients. The formula itself has a light emollient feel – although I’m not sure its sufficient to actually cushion and strengthen skin on its own.
6. Controls shine.
I use this with the Jane Iredale Purepressed Base on most days and do not have excess oil production within a 12 hour period. While it does have silicones and silica, it does not have the mattifying look (or feel) of traditional primers. I consider that a huge plus since it doesn’t cause skin to look crepey or dry.
7. Soothes and calms skin.
It works for me. Since using this regularly, my skin is less reactive and redness had diminished in spite of using stronger skin care products.
8. Reduces the appearance of imperfections.
After searching for a pore minimizing product that didn’t clog my pores or make me look dry proved futile, I love the perfecting finish of the Golden Glow. Pores are still visible – but take a back seat to the luminous skin that precedes it.
While some users may want a different color (Marcelle does have traditional BB Creams which comes in several shades) and consider the absence of SPF a minus – Marcelle BB Cream Golden Glow has easily become my go-to skin perfecting product.
