QUICK REVIEW: The Skin Lightening Treatment was the stand out in this four product regimen. While I had difficulty sticking to the regimen as a whole – I don’t think it will be an issue for those who like a simplified routine (with the addition of a makeup remover and regular face wash). The products are results oriented and even as a seasoned cosmetic junkie – I was impressed with the results.
In case you were wondering – yes, this is the same Rodan and Fields that started Proactiv Solutions and promised us hopeful consumers – clear skin. 17 years later (the brand launched in 1995) those of us who once battled acne are now faced with a whole other list of concerns. Wrinkles, age spots, sensitivity, sagging…just to name a glorious few.
To be honest, I am normally resistant to these multi-level marketing brand products – regardless of the quality of their products or the validity of their claims. Still, after seeing the results of the Rodan + Fields Reverse Regimen on a person I actually KNEW – I figured I had nothing to lose.
Rodan + Fields 4-Product REVERSE Regimen Details & Study Results→
Personally, my biggest skin care issue is pigmentation and sagging. Until this trial, I’ve steered clear of products with hydroquinone and retinol. My normally strong, resilient skin rebelled after I had my children – leaving me with a complexion more temperamental than a cranky two year old. I am (of all things) allergic to most sunscreens and any encounters with stronger OTC ingredients have left me peeling, red and rashy. Not cute. I have a large pigmented spot on my right cheek that is the bane of my complexion – I will be focusing on the improvement on this area for this review.
(Day 1-28) Since sensitivity was a concern, I started the regimen very very conservatively. It is product recommended that the entire 4-step regimen is first applied every other day in the morning, which increases to every morning, etc. – until you are using the regimen everyday and night. I took this a step further and started with just the Reverse Deep Exfoliation Wash for a few days, added the Reverse Skin Lightening Toner every other day and added the treatment after about a week.
Here is the recommended regimen schedule as provided by Rodan and Fields with your kit:
My combination-sensitive skin cannot handle all 3 core products twice a day. In my opinion, using an physical scrub – no matter how gentle – twice a day is too much, so I reduced the use of the Deep Exfoliating Wash to 3-4x a week (AM or PM). Same with the Skin Lightening Toner, which ideally should be used in tandem with the Skin Lightening Treatment. Still – no matter how effectively, I do not want to irritate my skin.
Reverse Deep Exfoliating Wash ($41): Non-foaming cream-based cleanser with a slightly minty scent that uses polyethylene beads and alpha hydroxy acids to remove dead skin cells. It does NOT remove makeup and cannot be used around the eye area – but leaves skin smooth and radiant. I prefer using this as an exfoliator 3-4x a week vs. a daily cleanser. This should also be a larger size since it will run out way before the other products. (Option: Rodan & Fields Micro-Dermabraision Paste)
Reverse Skin Lightening Toner ($41): A liquid toner with a strong citrus fragrance that contains 2% hydroquinone, kojic acid and anti-oxidants. Part of a two layer approach to hydroquinone application. This caused a little more irritation than the other products – but is a key part of the brightening process.
UPDATE: I ended up taking this out of my routine completely since it made me itch – but I’m rarely successful with toner products, so my reaction is probably uncommon.
Reverse Skin Lightening Treatment ($77, pictured): A creamy treatment with a mild fragrance that provides the second layer of 2% hydroquinone. Added retinol and vitamin C enhances the brightening process. Although it was a thicker cream, it didn’t feel heavy or greasy and wore well under makeup. Of the 3 core products, I used this one the most consistently. I would repurchase this.
Reverse Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ Sunscreen ($41). This SPF 50 sunscreen has a rich, creamy texture and sunscreen/citrus scent. I did not use this at all since I’m allergic to most sunscreen products (they give me a bumpy rash). This has licorice and mulberry, natural skin brighteners and is a vital part of the Reverse regimen. I was too concerned about sensitivity to try it, but would recommend adding it to the routine. The high SPF is ideal for those using active brightening products.
UPDATE: I gave this a try on several occasions with no reaction! Like the Skin Lightening Treatment, it felt a little heavy going on, but the sensation quickly disappeared. For those who need a little more moisture, the AM step from the REDEFINE Regimen (I’ll be reviewing these products shortly).
**Day 1 photo was taken with the Samsung Galaxy Note in bathroom lighting. Day 38 and 2 month photo was taken with the Note 2 in bathroom lighting.
After 38 days of inconsistent use, there is still a noticeable difference in the overall brightness and tone of my skin. The texture is refined, pores less visible and the darkness of the large spot shown has decreased. Within the month of use, I use far less concealer and do not require a lot of coverage from my foundation/powder.
the END RESULTS: My big spot is lighter, but not “gone”. I will continue to use the Wash a few times a week and the Treatment step for another 2 months. The smaller spots and acne scars have also decreased, but have not completely faded. Still, the overall results are impressive – as a whole, skin is brighter, smoother and “better”.
Okay – so Rodan + Fields Reverse Regimen didn’t give me the results I had hoped for. I still think if I were to be more committed to the steps and use them AM and PM, the results would be more dramatic. Even so, I was very impressed with the results I got with my inconsistent use. The Reverse Skin Lightening Treatment was my favorite product – and I will likely repurchase that product based on its own merits.
That said – for those women who are not crazy, obsessive, cosmetic monsters – the simplicity and effectiveness of the Rodan and Fields regimen systems are quite comprehensive. It’s general users will be happy with the results – and not having to go through trial and error, along with wasting time and money on products that may not yield the results they are looking for.
