Balloons Around the World 2013 + 2 Other Fun Things

BALLOONS AROUND THE WORLD 2013 - KAHALA MALL

Balloons Around the World 2013 Sculpture at Kahala Mall – Balloon Artists: Dr. Mark Morisaki (aka The Balloon Doctor), Gene Tamashiro and Suzette Arita.

It doesn’t matter how old you are – everyone loves balloons! They’re colorful, fun – and when a balloon artist literally pulls a rabbit out of their hat, these simple air-filled bits of rubber are magical. October 02, 2013 was Balloons Around the World Day – balloon sculptures around the world arranged thousands of balloons into dogs, hats and a variety of colorful sculptures and displays.

I happened upon this delightful display on my way to Wholefoods – and it literally had me smiling all day!

BISHOP MUSEUM LEGO TRAVEL ADVENTURE October 05, 2013 – January 05, 2014

Lego Travel Adventure Exhibit at Bishop MuseumThis October Bishop Museum will bring the blockbuster children’s exhibit, LEGO® Travel Adventure to Honolulu! In this exhibit, children are invited to create vehicles capable of flying, driving, and floating – or all three.

To go on a travel adventure to exotic locations, children are asked to think creatively, plan, and build vehicles to move through all kinds of terrain – mountains, oceans, jungles, deserts, and more. This newest LEGO exhibit is filled with colorful backdrops, kid-friendly building activities, and eye-popping LEGO sculptures.

What will you build?

My two girls (11 & 4) thoroughly enjoyed this creative and family friendly (I played too!) exhibit. I’m not posting pictures of the displays (I don’t want to spoil it!) which are truly amazing. There is a car race station where you can build your own car and race with other cars (much like the Girl Scout Powder Puff Derby), giant lego area, interactive displays, building stations (for children over 3) and a picture station to photograph and share your creations. Really fun stuff and a great way to start of your day. I recommend getting their early (or on weekdays) for best parking and less crowds.

Ever wonder how those colorful bars of soap are made? In this fun, 30 minute soap making class, you will create a unique bar made just for you! This would be a really fun activity to do with your older children (pre-teen and up). Finish the afternoon by picking up a few fun (and inexpensive) The Face Shop nail colors for a DIY manicure after a nice lunch at Paesano (also in the Waimalu Plaza).

The Face Shop also has a great selection of “first” skin care. I picked up the Phyto Powder in Cleansing Foam with Charcoal ($9) for my daughter. The Chia line or Volcanic Clay line would also be good first time choice. Just keep it simple – they probably only need a good cleanser (AM and PM) and oil free SPF (The Face Shop Oil Cut Sunscreen SPF 40).
