MARCH 2014

JUST NATURAL SHAMPOO TO REMOVE BUILD UPThe age-old (yes, organic awakenings aren’t new) debate of Science vs. Nature has spilled over into the beauty world. The manic-organics have sprung forth in droves waving their biodegradable flags like apocalyptic prophets warning us against parabens and preservatives. I’m being comedic here of course, but like most parodies, my sentiments are laced with truth.

Just Natural Shampoo to Remove Build Up ($24.99 for 16 oz.) justnaturalskincare.com | All natural slightly minty shampoo resets hair for the week.

SCIENCE AND NATURE

Seriously – when did shampoo become “bad” for you? Do I need to choose between drying sulfates and “nasty” chemicals (manic-organics like this term) or resort to a vinegar rinse? Do I want my hair to smell like a pickle? Luckily, there is a middle road. Just Natural Shampoos are natural, cruelty free, chemical free, made in the USA, etc. My family’s hair woes have vanished (issues including eczema, oily scalp, break outs and stress related hair loss) and I didn’t have to resort to the stripped down extreme.

So I choose Science AND Nature – approaching each with equal enthusiasm and skepticism. After all, I love a good all natural product (if it works) and admire those with the conviction to commit to an all-natural beauty routine. On the flip side – I can’t give up peptides and stem cells. Please don’t view this as a character flaw.

HAPPY FACES,

TATCHA INDIGO SOOTHING RENEWAL TREATMENT 2TATCHA INDIGO SOOTHING RENEWAL TREATMENT ($98 for 15mL | $$$) tatcha.com | ★★★★★★★★☆ (9/10)

Yes – its blue (or indigo rather). Tatcha Indigo Soothing Renewal Treatment is the size of a standard eye cream, has the consistency of a rich night cream and eliminates dry, itchy skin (even mild eczema) like magic. At first, the price was a little shocking – but much like Tatcha’s other products (namely One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil and Moisture Rich Silk Cream) the continuous presence of this little purple jar on my vanity is a non-negotiable. Healthy Snacks

HEALTHY SNACKSI love snacks. Honey mustard pretzel bits, marshmallow crispy Oreos, Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate Therapy – take me away. But the hard reality is – those gooey bits of goodness aren’t good for you. Happy for a moment – but chubby and (I know, I know) not good for your health.

Go Raw Lemon, Carrot Cake & Ginger Snap Super Cookies, KIND Bars, Shale Snacks & Dried Veggie Chips (sold by the pound at health food stores).

Luckily, I can find the same satisfaction in these healthier options. Always in moderation, this selection of raw “cookies”, dried veggie chips (so good) and nut/fruit bars really help me keep on track. Keeping crunchy, chewy, sweet, salty options on hand help tackle any craving.

ZOES STARS
UPDATE: On President’s Day (February 17, 2014) I completed my 4th Great Aloha Run with a time of 1 hour and 46 minutes. I missed my goal by about 6 minutes, but happy I was able to finish!! I also ran the Women’s 10k on March 2nd in 1 hour and 18 minutes. I’m by no means a fast runner – but managing to run at least 3 times a week is a major feat for me. I still have a love/hate relationship with it – but it clears my mind, improves my fibromyalgia symptoms and puts me in the right frame of mind to be healthier all around.

NEW BALANCE FRESH FOAM 980NIKE AIR PEGASUS CUSTOM

I love these new kicks! The New Balance Fresh Foam 980 ($109.99, newbalance.com) and custom Nike Pegasus (about $150, nike.com) are on my running wish list. I’m not sure if they go with my purple and orange running shorts – but I’ll make it work.
