Product Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ (8/10)
Created with exceptional purity in mind, this ultrathin, skin-perfecting fluid provides seamless adjustable coverage, a natural finish and the look and feel of beautiful skin while delivering a noticeably brighter, more youthful appearance.
Experience/Skin Type: Ultra-fluid concentrated liquid foundation with slight “chemical” scent (no fragrance) & silky texture. Suggested for all skin types.
Key Ingredients: Vitamin C: This skin-brightening superpower is known to fade existing dark spots and discolorations for more even-toned skin. Lilac Plant Stem Cells: Lilac plant stem cells are recognized for their exceptional healing abilities and are known to provide powerful antioxidant protection. We extract these cells, fortify them with our unique mineral complex and infuse them into our formula to improve the appearance of skin and help it defend against environmental stressors. Titanium Dioxide: This non-chemical, mineral sunscreen provides broad spectrum SPF 20 protection against the sun’s damaging rays. Formulated without water, oil, silicone, parabens or fragrance.
Quick Review: Medium coverage, natural finish, no silicone and no chemical sunscreen…I should LOVE this foundation, but I only like it. It doesn’t deliver the brightening that it suggests and provides too much coverage for a true bare skin finish. That said, its still worth a look and better than most foundations on the market.
When it comes to mineral makeup, I happily attribute its wild success to BareMinerals (or Bare Escentuals). Unfortunately, I have been systematically unsuccessful with their products due to my allergy to Bismuth Oxychloride. The NEW Bareskin Pure Brightening Serum Foundation (Launch: May 1) sparked my interest since it is free of silicone, has a chemical-free (Titanium Dioxide) SPF 20 and is infused with a tone-correcting skincare serum. Plus at $29, its a great deal in comparison to the other products I use.
Before we go any further – I must express my displeasure with the bottle. The bottle itself is a firm plastic with secure twist on lid. The opening is very small and narrow, only allowing a very small amount of product to be dispensed. While I understand the function since the formula is very thin, its very difficult to squeeze the product out! Such a small, but important detail.
It should also be noted that the bareMinerals Bareskin Perfecting Face Brush is sold separately for $28. Its a nice enough brush, but if you already have a foundation brush, it’ll do just fine. Plus, I actually preferred applying this with my fingertips.
Bareskin Pure Brightening Serum Foundation has a very thin, liquid texture with a fine, silky finish. Since it’s fragrance free, it does have a slightly chemical smell that disappears and isn’t an issue. The waterless, silicone free formula spreads very easily, so be sure to only use very small amounts of product at a time. The buildable, medium coverage texture has a matte finish that may “catch” on rougher skin or dry spots.
While the product lists Lilac Plant Stem Cells for anti-oxidant properties & Vitamin C (magnesium ascorbyl phosphate) – the expectation that these ingredients can provide any significant benefits is unlikely. Still – I’ll take whatever help I can get. With an 11% Titanium Dioxide SPF 20, it can provide a good amount of secondary sun protection over your usual sunscreen.
How Does it Look? The Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides (an oily liquid derived from coconut oil and glycerin) gives Bareskin its super slippery texture and smooth after-touch, which translates beautifully on well-prepped skin. If you have rough texture, pigmentation issues, dry skin or lots of fine lines/wrinkles – be prepared to see a bit more of the foundation on these troublesome areas. Wearing a good moisturizer first and letting it absorb into the skin before applying Bareskin with your fingertips (vs. brush) works best. Regardless, overall skin looks more even toned, mattified, smoother and prettier in general. I can’t say that skin looked brighter, but the finish lasted all day, even in humid conditions and didn’t feel heavy.
With a remarkably short ingredient list for a liquid foundation, long lasting coverage and an undeniably natural look and feel, bareMinerals Bareskin Pure Brightening Serum Foundation offers some skin care benefits as well. Those who are not typically successful with silicone-based foundations can experience the slip and smoothing benefits without the irritation or clogged pores. While the Bareskin Perfecting Face Brush is a novel applicator, its not necessary and can actually impede the smoothing qualities of this extremely fluid foundation. With 20 skin tone correct shades to choose from and powder-optional finish, its a great choice for the warmer months ahead.
