SEPHORA SAYS: This innovative eye palette features coated pigments formulated with coating technology to create multiple effects when wet, allowing the shadows to transform in one of four ways—allowing these 14 shadows to become 28 shades in just one palette. When wet, these colors amp up vibrancy, become deeper, turn metallic, or create sparkle for endless, customizable eye looks.

MONSTER SAYS: Eyeshadow palettes have been my latest obsession. The Smashbox Full Exposure palette that features coordinating matte and shimmery shades is one of my all-time favorites, so when Sephora launched the SMASHBOX DOUBLE EXPOSURE PALETTE ($52) as a VIB Rouge exclusive – I didn’t hesitate. Each shade can effectively be used wet or dry – adding additional intensity or transforming it into a rich metallic.

Smashbox Double Exposure Palette Review

What surprised me the most about this palette was the amount of pigmentation. I’ll be honest – I don’t always want a fully loaded shadow, but prefer the shades to be buildable and clear (not ashy or chalky). The pale shades in this palette do not appeal to me, but will be amazing for those with lighter skin tones. One of my BIGGEST shadow peeves is the frosty pale shadow on the brow bone. It’s so…80’s. Trust me. I was there. As a touch of shimmer in the inner corners or to make the eyelids “pop”, the warmer shades like Quartz and Veiled were better choices for me.

There’s a great selection of deep shades that really didn’t need to be applied wet, but intensified nicely without any overcast. The shadows lasted all day without any fall-out, although those with fading issues can use the Smashbox 24 Hour Photo Finish Shadow Primer ($20) to really make things last.

Also included is a fairly useful double ended brush (for those who travel) and mini Full Exposure Mascara. It would have been cooler to have a double sided liner like the original Urban Decay Naked Palette.

I personally wish this palette had a few more browns – but in combination with the Full Exposure Palette, the SMASHBOX DOUBLE EXPOSURE PALETTE could very well be the only shadows you’ll ever need. Richly pigmented, long lasting and versatile, this is sure to become a classic must-have and would make an incredible gift for your makeup savvy friends and family. Definitely one to watch.

All swatches were applied to skin with a gauze pad.

Smashbox Double Exposure Palette Swatches - Top Row

SHADE dry effect – wet effect | SILVER shimmer – metallic | MAUVE satin – metallic | PEONY shimmer – metallic | BLANC shimmer – metallic | QUARTZ shimmer – amps up vibrancy | FLUSHED shimmer – gets deeper | VEILED satin – amps up vibrancy

Smashbox Double Exposure Palette Swatches - Bottom Row

SHADE dry effect – wet effect | MIDNIGHT satin – adds sparkle | TEMPER satin – adds sparkle | HAZE shimmer – gets deeper | NOIR matte – gets deeper | COPPER shimmer – turns metallic | FIG matte – gets deeper | ESPRESSO matte – gets deeper

Notes: Liked most of the shades better dry – particularly Noir which is a dark black shadow on its own. Using water make some of the shades more red (Fig) but did work well with the plum tones (Temper & Haze). The light shades got a little too heavy when used wet.
